本书为“中华经典诵读工程”的重要成果，全书共分为六册，每册为一级，对应义务教育一至六年级。
一、二年级各选取诗词50首，三、四年级各选取诗词55首，五、六级各选取诗词60首。所选作品原文均从校勘完善的通行权威研究中选录，选材时间从西周至清朝。每首诗/词下设有作者、注释、导读、诵读指导等板块，做到评析客观，用词严谨；在讲解诗词语言意义之外，同时指导学生对作品进行诵读，从而增强学生对文学意境赏析和审美的兴趣。
本书配有著名诵读专家为每首诗词录制的朗诵录音、著名画家专为诗词绘制的国画、著名民乐演奏家专为每首诗词录制的乐曲。
本书还配有APP（应用软件），供读者查阅本书内容、进行学习自测。

今年春天，由中国语文现代化学会编写的《中华经典诗词分级诵读本》（一至六级）由人民教育出版社出版了。《中华经典诗词分级诵读本》为了贯彻《关于实施中华优秀传统文化传承发展工程的意见》而组织实施的“中华经典诵读工程”的重要成果。《中华经典诗词分级诵读本》收录了自先秦至清朝经典诗词近千首，共分12级，包括小学6级、初中3级和高中3级，与语文教材配套，涵盖了教材中的诗词并有所扩展。每首诗词原文下设“作者”“注释”“导读”和“诵读”四个板块的讲解。这套诵读本的七至十二级也将于近期陆续出版。
《中华经典诗词分级本》（一至六级）每级一册，图文并茂。每册书虽然只有薄薄的几十页，凝聚了数十位专家、艺术家的心血，寄托了老中青三辈人的深情。
主编靳光瑾教授现任中国语文现代化学会会长，长期关注并大力推广中华经典诗词的传承。为了让中华经典诗词走进中小学生心里，她组织编写团队精心做了五件事：一是给诗词分级，二是编写诵读指导，三是邀请名家录制诵读录音，四是邀请国画名家绘制诗意画，五是制作APP应用软件。
给诗词分级是本书的创新。中华经典诗词众多，但并非都适合中小学生诵读。只有挑选真正适合中小学生诵读的经典诗词，中华经典诗词才能更易于学生们接受，从而达到有效传承的目的。这些诗词中有哪些是适合小学生阅读的，哪些是适合中学生阅读的，以往并没有人进行过研究。靳光瑾教授专门为此申请了国家科研课题，带领科研团队在全国中小学校开展调研，运用语料库技术处理调研结果，*终制订出科学分级量化表，并通过了国家权威研究机构的验收。编写团队运用此量化表，并根据语文教材的内容，首次实现了给中华经典诗词分级。
为了帮助学生掌握科学诵读方法，提高诵读水平，本书邀请专家为每一首诗词撰写了诵读指导。指导的内容包括指明诗词的整体情感基调、诗句节奏，强调重点词句的语速、语调和重音，等等。指导细致、简明、通俗，避免使用专业术语，易于小学生理解掌握。诵读指导的编写为教学提供了科学依据和重要参考，极大方便了诵读教学。
应编写组盛情邀约，多位诵读名家倾情参与录制诵读录音，供学生学习。这些诵读名家中，方明、雅坤、虹云、黎江、陆洋老师都是中央人民广播电台的播音艺术家。1987年中央电视台的春节联欢晚会上，方明老师即席朗诵了杜甫的《春夜喜雨》。“好雨知时节，当春乃发生。随风潜入夜，润物细无声。”他的朗诵感情饱满，富有韵律，获得了广泛赞誉。曹灿老师是国家话剧院著名表演艺术家，曾在中央人民广播电台少儿节目《小喇叭》中播讲过众多故事，被孩子们亲切地称为“曹灿叔叔”。李慧敏老师是著名播音主持人，曾演播过《哈利波特》系列广播剧，广受好评。语文教育家苏立康教授受邀承担了现场监制工作。
