本书出版的意义及重要性•中国自秦汉以来即有远洋海路记载，比起西方航海文件要早许多年。而且，中国是指南针的发明者，宋代便已用罗盘导航，是*早把指南针用于航海的国家，元代开始有航路指南记录，明代更有了专门的针经著作。这些珍贵的文献和典籍，讲述了航海技术的应用、海路开拓、航海方略及针路往来，较详细地记录了中国东海、南海等海域的情况及“海上丝绸之路”的开拓发展。
•撰辑所有这些海路、海图、针经，既展示了古老的中华海洋文明，呈现了先民们发现、经营东海南海诸岛的成就，也弘扬了对外航海开拓、交流合作的“海上丝绸之路”精神，使文化遗产能世代流传，促进对外文化交流。
1.角度新颖，意义独特
为使国人对祖先有关航海技术的发明、创造和应用能够珍视并继往开来，且为保卫海疆提供*原始、*珍贵的史料，本项目集合了海峡两岸和香港众多学者，耗时长达7年，全方位研究古代汉籍，着重选取与海路、针经及与航行密切相关的内容，原书有附图的也尽量予以收录，并对180万字的古籍原文加以点校，凡地名等均加专名号，便于后辈及广大读者阅读和继续研究。
2.搜罗宏富，规模巨大
本项目集录了先秦至清代现存全部有关海路行程及针经导航的珍贵史料，所搜图书共约160种，其中民间舟子船工的针经约45种(主要来自粤、琼、闽、浙)。全书收录450幅图片，古航海图就有200多幅。
3. 史料珍贵，全国*
其中极其珍贵的1幅彩色《明代东西洋航海图》全图和本次由该图切割的7幅细部彩图，以及彩色的《清代东南洋航海图》共122幅，是其他书籍所未曾拥有的。
