有人问郭泰：“那黄宪是个牛医的儿子，你怎么这样喜欢他呢？”郭泰答道：“你们只知道黄宪是兽医的儿子，却不知道那人器量广大，澄之不清，扰之不浊。你说一个人有这样的雅量，我能不喜欢他吗？”
有一天，陈元方的儿子陈群和陈季方的儿子陈忠，互相争论父亲的功德。两人相持不下，便只好请祖父陈太丘来裁断。
陈太丘听了他们的争论以后，微微笑道：“元方难为兄，季方难为弟。”意思是说：兄弟都是英才，所以做哥哥不容易，做弟弟也不容易。
有一次，他到城中去探望朋友的病，刚好碰上胡贼来攻城，城里的人都吓得逃光了。那友人便对荀巨伯说：“我本来就死定了，你还是赶快走吧。”荀巨伯说：“我是担心你的身体才来看你的。现在你有了意外的急难，我如果逃走的话，那当初何必又千里迢迢地赶来看你呢？”
胡贼入城以后，发现城里只有他们两个人，十分惊讶，便问：“满城的人都跑光了，你们两个怎么这样大胆，敢停留在这里？”荀巨伯说：“并不是我们特别大胆，而是我的朋友病得很重，我不忍心离开。”胡贼听了，只好摇摇头走了。
有一次，他们在园中种菜，忽然从泥中挖出了一块金子。这时管宁依旧挥动锄头，把金子视同瓦块一样铲开了。华歆看到了这块金子，却把它拾起来，远远地掷了出去。
后来又有一次，两人同坐在一块席子上读书，门外有一辆豪华的车子经过，管宁照旧读他的书，华歆却忍不住跑到门外去观看。
经过这两次以后，管宁发现华歆不是他的朋友。于是管宁毅然把坐席割成了两半，对华歆说：“我们还是分开来坐吧！”
在半路上，有个陌生人苦苦哀求要上船一起避难。这时华歆已发觉不妥，便再三推托，不让那人上船。王朗在旁边很看不过去，便说：“船上也还有空，就让他上来吧！”
陌生人上船以后，船继续前行。忽然有一批水贼追来了，王朗一看，才发觉刚才自己的大意。于是他就想把陌生人撵下船去。
