大约35亿年前，碳基的早期生命形式——单细胞微生物就已经出现。宇宙始于纯简，为稳定的物质所占据，越简单就越稳定。后来，变异提供了生物进化的原材料，如老子《道德经》中所言“道生一，一生二，二生三，三生万物”，地球经过几十亿年的发展形成了如今以碳循环和转化维持平衡的庞大生态系统。
与此同时，围绕地球第二大元素硅的生命线也在悄无声息地演化着。早在1891年，天体物理学家Julius Sheiner就撰写文章指出可能存在其他的生命形式，这种生命是以硅链为骨架构成的化合物，人们将其称为“硅基生命”。但在以ChatGPT为代表的AIGC应用出现之前，大众并没有注意到以人工智能为代表的硅基生命。
在碳基生物的演化链上，基因唯一感兴趣的就是不断地拷贝自身，以便在进化过程中争取最大限度的生存和扩张。生物本身就是基因的算法，而生命就是不断处理数据的过程，在大数据推荐算法得到普遍应用的当下，拥有大数据积累的外部环境反而比我们自己更了解我们。
