我曾赴日本各地向扫除道的前辈取经学习,又带领来自中国大陆、中国 及旅居海外的华人朋友参与公厕清扫,并进一步参加其全国性或区域性的定期扫除会。随着参访广度的拓展和深度的渐进,心中隐约浮现日本扫除道演进的大概轮廓。也曾在福井县曹洞宗本山永平寺挂单,于行住坐卧中体会,八百年前开山祖道元禅师远赴中国宁波天童 寺求法而后带回日本的“如佛一样的生活”。那对当时只知参禅不知办道的日本禅林乃至 界,是件石破 天惊的大事。修行人拾回本心入法界后, 要在日常点滴中活出佛法,方是真大乘皈依。道元赶上了中国 生活禅的末班车,带回了做饭吃饭、洒扫庭除等日用妙法。至今每天清晨,永平寺年轻僧人仍排排跪着用心抹地,与礼佛的虔诚恭敬无异,堪称庄严无比的生命 景。
在千年古木下,静观处处扫除到洁净发光的永平寺,我不禁寻思:那个为日本扫除道深深播下种子的人,就是道元禅师吧?百余年前,由西田天香创办的“一灯园”也是从扫除切入接引大众。当时正值西方文明风靡日本之初, 20岁出头的天香先生目睹世风日下,因忧国忧民而 食三日问天如何拯救,冥冥中感应到:“百姓如此颓废 乃心性散乱所致;心性散乱又起于生活环境之散乱。”天香先生于是决心挨家挨户无条件为人扫除,以此开启民智、点亮心灯。他以霹雳手段显菩萨心肠,震撼 了全日本,追随者成千上万,百年来还扩及从幼儿教育到自然农法等种种良知善业,并开创永续发展的生态系统。
到了近代,日本黄帽公司创办人键山秀三郎先生亲身垂范所激发的日本扫除道旋风, 为轰轰烈烈。只 是随着键山先生年岁 ,已不大能每日亲自扫除,各地拥护者也不再年轻,过去那种热烈响应的大众扫除活动,开始有些后劲不足。
以我“五十三参”般四处访道的经验,感觉能因应当下社会、 合适作为时下扫除道范本的,可能是新宫运送这类公司。
