【地藏菩萨本愿经】
【解】这是书的题目。就是说,赞述地藏菩萨的本有愿行的一部经典。
【释】这部经的题目,佛自己说有三种:一个叫地藏本愿;一个叫地藏本行;一个叫地藏本誓力。现在即用第一个为经题。地藏菩萨,是一个出世圣人的名字。“菩萨”是通名,“地藏”是专名。“菩萨”二字,梵文叫“菩提萨埵”,“菩提”是觉悟的意思,
“萨埵”是众生的意思,合起来说,就是“觉悟的众生”或是“觉悟众生”的人,叫做“菩萨”。菩萨的专名,都是随菩萨的德行而题的。这位菩萨叫做地藏,也是他的德行,有合乎“地藏”二字的意义。今且分别说来。“地”就是土地,万物都依住地的上面,又:地能生长草木的根芽。这位菩萨,有广大的慈悲,一切众生,都要靠他救护的;众生的善根,都要靠他生长的。好像土地一般,所以叫做“地”。“藏”就是宝藏,财宝足以救济人的贫苦,圆满人的事业。这位菩萨有无量的法财,布施一般苦恼众生,且使他们都能修行成就,好像宝藏一样,所以叫做“藏”。这一番的解释“地藏”二字,是譬喻菩萨的道德。
再因这位菩萨,看见地狱众生的苦,发心学佛,已证得如来藏性──众生和佛平等的本性──所以救拔地狱众生,是他的特别本领,所以叫做“地藏”。
再因这位菩萨,修地大圆通,证如来藏性,如持地菩萨,故菩萨来时,会中众生,都觉身重难举,因身中的地大──皮肉筋骨毛发爪牙属地大──受菩萨的影响,增强的缘故,所以叫“地藏”。这第二第三番的解释,“地藏”二字,都是表显菩萨的行为。总而言之,这位有地藏德行的菩萨,所以叫做“地藏菩萨”。
“本愿”二字,是说菩萨所发的愿,这个愿,是从他初发心来,常常所发的,直到现在,依然这样的发,并不是现在才发的,所以叫做“本愿”。
又这个愿,是他多生的菩萨行为所依据的,有这个愿,才有他的行,愿是行的根本,所以叫做“本愿”。这样看来,这个“本”字,有“本来”和“根本”的两个解释了。
“经”这一字,是世间圣人的训典,此书是佛菩萨的训典,佛菩萨是出世的圣人,所以也要称他为“经”,梵文本来叫修多罗。
这梵文的意思,直译起来,就是一个“线”字,有贯穿文义的意思,正同我们华文的“经纬”的“经”字相仿;文译起来,那是“契经”两字的意思,“契”是契合的解释,因出世圣人的训典,是一种合乎道理、合乎人情的说话,所以叫做“契经”。
