【十七、晋阳之战】春秋、战国之际，晋国日益强大的卿大夫，经过兼并，剩下赵、魏、韩、知四大贵族集团。实力最强、独专国政的知伯，逼韩康子、魏桓子割让大片领地后，又向赵襄子索地，被拒绝，乃于周贞定王十四年（前455），胁迫韩、魏共同发兵攻赵。
赵襄子自知寡不敌众，采纳谋臣张孟谈建议，选择民心向赵并预有准备的晋阳（今太原西南）固守。
知伯率联军攻晋阳三月不下，又围困一年多未克。至十六年，知伯引晋水（汾水）灌城，城内军民支棚而住，悬锅而炊，病饿交加，十分危急。赵襄子利用韩、魏与知伯的矛盾，派张孟谈乘夜潜出城外，密见韩、魏大夫，以唇亡齿寒的道理说服韩、魏倒戈。在约定的一个夜间，赵襄子派人杀知伯守堤官兵，掘堤放水，倒灌知伯军营。知氏军从梦中惊醒，乱作一团。
赵军乘势出击，韩、魏军自两翼夹攻，擒杀知伯，其军逃散。后赵、魏、韩灭知氏，瓜分其领地，逐渐形成“三家分晋”的局面。
【十八、桂陵之战】战国前期，齐军在桂陵（今河南长垣北）截击魏军的战役。
周显王八年（前361），魏惠王迁都大梁（今开
封），与向中原扩张的齐国争雄。齐拉拢韩、赵，削弱魏国的势力。十五年，赵在齐国支持下出兵攻卫。
魏惠王派将军庞涓率兵8万围攻赵都邯郸（今属河北）。次年，赵求救于齐。齐威王以田忌为将、孙膑为军师，率兵8万救赵。
此时赵、魏相持日久，魏军实力大损，邯郸也危在旦夕。田忌主张率齐军直赴赵地解围，孙膑认为应乘魏军精锐在外，魏都大梁空虚之机，采取“批亢捣虚”的战法迫使魏军回救大梁，赵围自解。为争取主动，孙膑故意以不懂军事的齐城、高唐二邑大夫率军一部攻魏军事重镇平陵（今山东定陶东北），结果兵败战死，造成齐军不堪一击的假象，麻痹庞涓。此后，田忌、孙膑率轻车锐卒西进直扑大梁，将主力分散隐蔽其后，造成兵力单薄的假象。庞涓中计，撤邯郸之围，率精锐兼程赶回，欲歼齐军于大梁。齐军在魏军必经之地桂陵设伏截击，大败魏军，擒（一说“擒”为制服、战胜）其主将庞涓。
此战，齐军避实击虚，攻其必救；又示弱骄敌，快速机动，巧施截击，创造了中国军事史上著名的“围魏救赵”诱敌就范的成功战例，对后世有深远影响。
