刘培，河南许昌人，2006至2015年在中国科学技术大学学习，获理学博士学位，现为中国科学技术大学科技史与科技考古系特任副研究员，研究方向为中国当代科学技术史、核工业史，在《自然辩证法通讯》、《中国科技史杂志》等学术刊物上发表论文数篇，主持省部级课题四项。张志辉，理学博士，中国科学技术大学科技史与科技考古系教授，中国科学技术史学会第九、十届理事会常务理事，研究方向为中国当代科技史、科技政策，发表论文三十余篇，出版著作四部。

     第一章 家世与青少年时代 杨承宗出生于江苏省吴江县八坼镇。 吴江位于苏州东南，东临上海，西濒太湖，南接浙江，北依苏州主城区，自古就是鱼米丝绸之乡、富庶繁华之地。八坼镇是吴江北部的一座小镇。据《百城烟水》载：“塘自北而来，至此向东而南，向西复南，俨似弓形。唐范传正治水，劈河而直其路，斥土为二，故名八坼。”1911年9月5日，旧历宣统三年七月十三，杨承宗在此出生。一个月后的10月10日，武昌起义爆发，打响了辛亥革命的第一枪，推翻了风雨飘摇中的清王朝。清朝的灭亡，标志着延续两千多年的皇权统治由此告一段落，中国历史翻开了新的篇章。暴风骤雨般的“大革命”，对于出生于此前后的那一代人的命运，无疑有着重大而深刻的影响。作为知识分子的杨承宗对于“革命”一词当然有着特别的理解与感受，后来他曾风趣地说：“‘’时期有人标榜‘老子生来就革命’，我真想同他们开玩笑说‘老子才是生来就革命呢’！” 刚强的慈父 杨家原籍陕西省弘农郡。七世以前，大灾之年搬到江南吴县居住，仍世代务农。杨承宗曾祖父茂文公务农之余，做些稻谷加工、米粮买卖的事，积累了一些家产，在沈家港建造了住屋。祖父镐堂公、父霭如公三辈在沈家港以务农耕读为生。19世纪中叶，英国以鸦片侵入中国，杨镐堂不慎染烟，家道中落返贫。杨父霭如在十三岁之年不得不离开沈家港村，到同县八坼镇周家米行做学徒。 杨蔼如刻苦坚忍，先在站场学习收购斛量、运送入仓，日逾千百石，高强度的体力劳动也使他体格强壮。后凭诚实得米行东家信任，进柜从事财务工作。于是细心学字习算，在幼年乡间小塾三年文化的基础上，自学努力，不仅练就了一手好字，还能打出两手好算盘。或是左右手同时打，互相核对结果，或是左手拨打算盘，右手写字入账。从学徒、卖场工人、财务职员，一直做到账房先生。工作之余，杨蔼如还关心世事时务。中年以后更是医卜星相、天文地理，无不涉足。杨承宗少时多病，父亲从外地回家常见其小病不断，便开几付“汤头”（即药方），到对河的太和堂药店赎药一服便好，足见其医术高明。 杨承宗出生之年，周家将米行出让给杨蔼如。杨蔼如接业后，将店铺搬迁至八坼北港桥东岸，取名生泰米行。为了易于照顾，他举家搬至生泰米行的后院居住，遂成前店后居的格局。米行初期业务从收购稻谷、糙米开始，在行内设有去砻糠（稻壳）及去米糠舂米两级原始设备。杨蔼如从当地钱庄贷款购买了机器设备，将米业加工链中最费人力的米糠分类环节改良，以碾米机器代替几百年来农人传用的舂米臼，工作效率剧增。生泰米行业务逐步兴旺，生泰白米更远销上海等地，时称“苏州白梗”。 杨承宗生于周家米行，长在生泰米行。从记事时起，便发觉父亲创业的本领之大。以生泰为中心，房屋东西至少有十多开间，南北更是屋宇连绵，令幼时的他无法计数。一片错落无序的建筑群中，营业场所、仓库、工场、住所交织着大小天井、花圃、晒场和一个百平米的池塘，缤纷相织，面积不下一公顷。 杨承宗少时，父亲事业进一步扩大。杨蔼如对农产品加工的机械化十分推崇，除经营生泰米行外，还开有厚生布庄。开办厚生布庄的初衷原为收购棉花，经过轧棉机轧制成花絮，返销农民用以纺纱织布。后因棉花产值不及水稻，地方产棉日减，厚生布庄乃改变经营方针，利用从上海售米之资金，从沪买回洋纱（即上海纱厂机械化大生产品）。洋纱价廉质美，受人欢迎，对“厚生”称道者颇多。 P9-11
