确实，一段时间以来，有好些船只在海上与“一个庞然大物”相遇。那是一个长长的梭子状物体，有时泛着磷光，比鲸鱼的个头儿大，而且速度也比鲸鱼快得多。
各种不同船只的航海日志对出现的这个庞然大物都做了记录，说这个物体或这个生物速度极其的快，动力极其的大，像是天生就具有强大的生命力。如果说它是一个鲸类动物的话，那它的体积要比当时科学所分类的所有的鲸鱼都要大得多得多。无论是居维叶、拉塞拜德、迪梅里先生，还是卡特尔法热，都不会承认这么个大怪物的存在，除非是他们见过它，也就是说，除非他们自己亲眼所见。按照多次观察所得，平均算来（去除保守的估计，即此物长二百尺，也不按夸张的算法，即这个大家伙宽一海里，长三海里），我们可以肯定，这个庞然大物要大大超过鱼类学家们迄今为止所认同的所有的鱼类，如果这个大家伙真的是存在的话。
