全书由《中国早期艺术史》和附录两部分组成。

《中国早期艺术史》初版于1929年，是西方汉学界系统研究中国早期艺术史的发轫之作。全书分四卷：汉朝之前、汉朝、雕塑、建筑，共收录海内外博物馆、私人藏家珍藏的文物和名胜古迹的照片900余幅。如今，这些文物和名胜古迹相当一部分遭到不同程度的破坏，甚至消失不见了，足见本书之价值。

附录部分《中国景观：喜仁龙的摄影及见闻》初版于1937年，收录喜仁龙在中国旅行时拍摄的各地建筑、园林、风俗照片157幅。原书为丹麦语，仅发行600部，是喜仁龙印量*少的著作。

喜仁龙(Osvald Sirén，1879—1966)：20世纪西方极为重要的中国美术史专家，首届查尔斯·兰·弗利尔奖章获得者。曾担任瑞典斯德哥尔摩大学艺术史教授、瑞典国家博物馆绘画与雕塑部主任馆员等职。1916年起，先后赴美国耶鲁大学、哈佛大学和日本的诸多名校讲学。1920年起六次来华，曾在末代皇帝溥仪陪同下拍摄故宫，对中国古代建筑、雕塑、绘画艺术研究极深，代表作有《北京的城墙和城门》（1924）、《中国雕塑》（1925）、《中国北京皇城写真全图》（1926）、《中国早期艺术史》（1929）、《中国绘画史》（1929—1930）、《中国园林》（1949）等。

中国早期艺术经历了怎样的发展历程？哪些因素对汉朝艺术风格的形成影响？这是专家们仍在讨论的问题。汉朝时，中国与西亚建立了新的密切联系，极大地促成了艺术表现的重塑。与此同时，新的艺术思潮摆脱了古老的形式主义，追求抽象的象征主义，艺术手法和成果向着更为自由、更有创造力的方向发展。比如，道家思想中的洞天福地及居住于其中的仙人等概念，在艺术领域中发挥了重要作用，这一时期的器物、镜子和饰物上有大量的相关图案。但有的图案非常写实，以至于人们怀疑，激发艺术家创作灵感的到底是其象征意义还是其实际表现。汉朝艺术家们采用丰富的艺术手段，创造出了大量的艺术品，仅从有限的几个视角来考察全部艺术品是不全面的。尽管出土的文物日益增多，但有可靠出土地点信息的却很少，因此，目前我们还不可能根据地域对它们进行分类。而对汉朝艺术品进行分类又是进行细致研究的为必要的前提之一。汉朝传统文化在中国中部和北部地区发展得为充分，因而我们只讨论这些地方一些典型的艺术品，它们可以展现出汉朝艺术品的主要艺术造型和风格发展趋势。

前文提到的朝鲜平壤附近的9号墓中发掘出的剑柄（图6A），其制造年代大致可以看作汉朝艺术的起点。同一座墓中还有一件漆碗，碗上铭文显示时间为公元8年。这件剑柄原本可能固定在剑鞘上，两个龙形装饰的尾部与两个饕餮纹相连。龙身弯曲，龙口大张，似要争斗一番，却被剑分开了。尽管它们只是装饰，但其灵活的躯体和紧绷的爪子充满力量，表现出了蓬勃的生机和活力。
