和我做伴的是牧场里的六匹小马，他们都比我年长，其中几个几乎有成年的马那么高大。我总是跟着他们跑，玩得很开心。我们爱绕着草地一圈圈地尽情飞奔。有时玩得相当野蛮，因为这几匹小马会一边奔跑，一边不断地又踢又咬。

我一直记得妈妈的这些忠告。她是一匹聪明成熟的马，我们主人**看重她。她名叫“公爵夫人”，但主人会叫她“宝儿”。
主人善良又和气，他给我们吃得好，住得好，对我们说话也总是好言好语，和善得就像在跟自己的孩子说话。我们都很喜欢他，妈妈更是**爱他。只要他一出现在门口，妈妈就会欢喜地嘶叫着向他跑去，他也会拍打着她说：“啊，宝儿，你的小黑子怎么样？”我长得漆黑，所以他叫我“小黑子”。接着，他会递给我一片美味的面包，有时也会给妈妈一根胡萝卜。所有的马都愿意亲近他，但我想，主人*喜爱的应该是妈妈和我。赶集的时候，妈妈总会拉一辆轻便马车，载他去市里。
一个叫迪的小农夫，有时趁主人不在，就从树篱钻进我们田里摘黑莓。吃够了想吃的，他就拿小马取乐，朝我们扔石头，拿树枝戳我们，逼着我们跑。我们倒是不太介意，只要跑开就好了，但有时确实会被石头砸得挺疼。
