我初有记忆,清楚记得的**个地方,是片宽阔舒适的牧场。那里有个清澈的小池塘,几棵树的浓荫,斜斜地遮在水面上,水深处生长着灯芯草和睡莲。越过树篱,向一边望去,是大片耕过的土地;向另一边望去,能看见主人家的大门和坐落在路边的屋子。牧场的高坡上是冷杉林,低洼处则是一条奔流的小河,河岸陡峭。

等我长大一些后,能吃草了,妈妈就白天出去工作,晚上才回来。
和我做伴的是牧场里的六匹小马,他们都比我年长,其中几个几乎有成年的马那么高大。我总是跟着他们跑,玩得很开心。我们爱绕着草地一圈圈地尽情飞奔。有时玩得相当野蛮,因为这几匹小马会一边奔跑,一边不断地又踢又咬。
有一天,我们正踢得热闹,妈妈嘶鸣着唤我过去说:“我要跟你说几句话,希望你仔细听。在这里生活的小马,都是些好孩子,但他们的父母是拉货车的,所以他们不懂什么是礼貌。你呢,出身好,教养也好。你父亲有好名声,祖父也得过赛马奖杯,还赢过两次。你祖母则是我认识的马中,*温柔可亲的一个。你也没见过我踢谁咬谁吧?我希望你长大后,对人和气友善,千万别有那些毛病。无论做任何事,都心怀善意。跑动的时候,只是适当地抬抬蹄子,就算在玩游戏,也绝不踢咬。”
我一直记得妈妈的这些忠告。她是一匹聪明成熟的马,我们主人**看重她。她名叫“公爵夫人”,但主人会叫她“宝儿”。
主人善良又和气,他给我们吃得好,住得好,对我们说话也总是好言好语,和善得就像在跟自己的孩子说话。我们都很喜欢他,妈妈更是**爱他。只要他一出现在门口,妈妈就会欢喜地嘶叫着向他跑去,他也会拍打着她说:“啊,宝儿,你的小黑子怎么样?”我长得漆黑,所以他叫我“小黑子”。接着,他会递给我一片美味的面包,有时也会给妈妈一根胡萝卜。所有的马都愿意亲近他,但我想,主人*喜爱的应该是妈妈和我。赶集的时候,妈妈总会拉一辆轻便马车,载他去市里。
一个叫迪的小农夫,有时趁主人不在,就从树篱钻进我们田里摘黑莓。吃够了想吃的,他就拿小马取乐,朝我们扔石头,拿树枝戳我们,逼着我们跑。我们倒是不太介意,只要跑开就好了,但有时确实会被石头砸得挺疼。
有一天,他正玩着这游戏,压根儿没注意到,主人就在隔壁的田里。但是,他就在那儿,看见了发生的一切。他猛地跳过树篱,抓住迪的胳膊,一拳打在他耳朵上。迪又痛又惊讶,尖声叫了起来。我们一见到主人,全都跑了过来,看看出了什么事。
