I too was surprised by the size when I opened the packing box, but the size meets my needs for keeping them in my laptop case. Just what I needed. Alkaline batteries are included, a very nice touch to make them truly ready out of the box. The volume knob turns smoothly and evenly, not loose like something less. Then I listened to them from various sources....HQ music on Youtube, sounded impressive for the size of the speakers. As everyone has said and should know, small speakers are not going to have a low end sound. But these units sound clear and even in sound quality. I turned the volume up to above what I would normally listen to and there's no distortions, crackles or over modulation in the sound quality. They sound really good. Then I listened to high quality mp3's. Again I was impressed by these compact speakers, sounding even better than the first tryout.
The units come with a removable metal stand that quickly attaches in two holes so that you can stand them upright. But I've discovered that the units sound even better if they are laying flat on the table top. There is an explanation for this. For the same reason home speakers sound better set close to the walls, especially in a corner. The bass just projects better. I place these speakers on each side of my laptop, facing up and the stereo imaged just wraps around you in nice sound. My laptop has Altec Lansing speakers, which should better than most laptops. These little speakers sound even better than the built in ones.
The USB & battery power options makes the use of these speakers very flexible as well as having a standard mini-plug. I can use these with my mp3 player or anything else. I've not found very many that have these combination's of features in the same unit to give it such flexibility.
The price is great and a no brainer so to speak. These speakers were "made to order" for what I was looking for.
