Die Haut ist zwar flächenmäßig unser größtes (1,5 bis 2 m2) und gleichzeitig schwerstes (15 bis 20 kg) Organ, doch werden wir uns oft erst im Krankheitsfalle ihrer Bedeutung bewusst. Wenn die Haut gerötet ist, wenn sich Bläschen, Schuppen, Schwellungen und Schmerzen einstellen, sinkt unser körperliches und seelisches Wohlbefinden.
Vielfältiger Art sind die Aufgaben der Haut, z.B.:
Schutz sowohl vor mechanischen Einwirkungen wie Stoß, Druck und Reibung als auch vor dem Eindringen und Ausbreiten von Krankheitserregern aller ArtSchutz vor chemischen Einwirkungen (Wasch-, Spül- und Reinigungsmitteln)Schutz vor physikalischen Einwirkungen (Sonne, Wärme und Kälte).
Um diese zahlreichen Aufgaben bewältigen zu können, bedarf es eines komplizierten Aufbaus der Haut. Die am tiefsten gelegene Schicht der Haut, die Unterhaut, stellt die Verbindung mit den Muskeln her, wobei sie Unebenheiten im Muskelrelief ausgleicht. Sie ist ein lockeres, verschiebbares und mit Gewebsflüssigkeit durchtränktes Bindegewebe. Die Unterhaut wirkt als Flüssigkeitsmantel nach innen isolierend und nach außen abschirmend eingelagertes Fett unterstützt sie in dieser Schutzaufgabe. Fett- und Flüssigkeitsgehalt machen die Unterhaut auch zu einem verschiebbaren und druckelastischen Polster für die darüberliegenden Hautschichten. Darüber hinaus ist sie für die Prägung der Körperformen verantwortlich. Für den ganzen Körper stellt das 1/2 bis 1 cm dicke Unterhaut-Gewebe einen gewaltigen Nährstoff- und Flüssigkeitsspeicher dar, dessen sich unser Organismus nach Bedarf bedienen kann. Die mittlere Hautschicht, die Lederhaut, bildet das Tragwerk der gesamten Haut. So könnte ein Hautstreifen von 1 cm Breite unser Körpergewicht tragen, ohne zu zerreißen. Die Hauptmasse der Lederhaut besteht aus Fasergeflechten, die unsere Haut nicht nur reißfest machen, sondern ihr auch eine Anpassung an wechselnde Ausdehnung (Gelenke) ermöglichen. Zahlreiche Blutgefäße durchziehen Unterhaut und Lederhaut und führen der Haut Nährstoffe zu. Auch Nerven und feinste Nervenenden, die bis hinein in die Oberhautschichten reichen, sind zu finden. Die Nerven und die Blutgefäße stellen die Verbindung zu allen Organen des Körpers her. So ist es verständlich, dass die Haut zum Fenster unseres Körpers wird. Mit vielen Stiftchen, den so genannten Papillen, ist die Oberhaut an der Lederhaut befestigt. Sie ist mit durchschnittlich kaum 1/10 mm Dicke die dünnste Hautschicht. Nehmen wir zu lange ein Sonnenbad, dann blättert sie, dünn wie Seidenpapier, ab. Die Außenschichten der Oberhaut sind in wechselndem Ausmaß verhornt. Zum Schutz der Haut gegen mechanische Angriffe ist die Hornhaut an stark beanspruchten Stellen besonders kräftig entwickelt, z. B. an Sohle, Ferse und an den Händen (Hornhautschwielen). Ständig werden die toten Hornhautschichten abgenutzt und abgeschabt sie müssen daher fortwährend nachgebildet werden. Die von der untersten Schicht der Oberhaut gebildeten Zellen wandern in etwa 30 Tagen zur Oberfläche. Während dieser Zeit verhornen sie mehr und mehr, sterben ab und werden abgestoßen. Somit erneuert sich unser Organ Haut etwa alle 4 Wochen. Der Mensch stößt so im Laufe seines Lebens etwa sein eigenes Körpergewicht als Hornmaterial ab. Talgdrüsen- und Schweißabsonderungen überziehen die Haut mit einem feinen Filmbelag, der sie auch geschmeidig erhält und vor Bakterien, Viren und Pilzen schützt. Faszinierend ist die Betrachtung, wie viele Zellen oder Sinnesorgane 1 cm2 Haut durchschnittlich enthält.
