Details: Marmite was conceived in 1902 and the Marmite Food Company opened a small factory in Burton-on-Trent where it still resides today. It took a couple of years to perfect the recipe and for the British public to warm to the spread's distinctive taste. Before Louis Pasteur realized that the cells in yeast were in fact living plants, people simply discarded this by-product of the brewing process. German scientist Liebig then went on to make yeast into a concentrated food product - one that resembled meat extract but was in fact vegetarian. Following the discovery of vitamins in 1912, yeast was found to be a great source of five important 'B' vitamins. As a result Marmite was included in soldiers' ration packs during World War I. It became a dietary supplement in prisoner-of-war camps in World War II and was sent to British peacekeeping forces in Kosovo to boost morale in 1999. Today Marmite is a nutritious, black, tasty, savory spread enjoyable on toast or bread or even as a cooking ingredient. It is made from spent brewer’s yeast and comes in a distinctive black jar with a yellow lid.

Still don't know if I like it

As an American trying this for the first time, I honestly don't know if I like it or not. I keep coming back and trying it again though, so that has to count for something. It's certainly an interesting taste and I'm happy I bought it to try.

    Magnificent Marmite

I could not live without Marmite. It is so wonderful. I've always eaten it and I always spread it over gorgeous rich toast. My family loves it too. It's just so special, and please keep selling it!

    It is Marmite alright

I got this for my brother-in-law who is visiting from the UK. He loves the stuff and says it taste just like home. I tasted some and it’s like a weird salty spread that reminds me of my dogs nutritional gel. It wasn’t bad just different. If I had it again it would probably be with something more than just toast and butter (I hear it’s supposed to be good with a sharp cheddar).

Ok this is a review I've been wanting to write forever

OMG ok as an American no video, movie, review, post, article, can prepare you for the first time you try Vegemite... why cause after everything I've read and seen about it I can actually say, B.S. to all of it, I will give you my B.S. opinion take it or leave itVegemite taste like vege bullion paste period super salty and no doubt pungent. Like a bullion cube and now you know what vegemite taste like, if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong it's my opinion and first impressionI have no clue how to use it now because it's scary on taste it's far to salty, and it would be sad to use it in soup...eF'in e'S after typing Soup it hit me, Bloody Miso its exactly like Miso Red Friggin Exactly like Miso Paste!!! Wow only diff is the texture this is gummy like tar, but in a good way, and Miso Red is smooth, I even said Red because Red is slightly closer in texture to it than the not so refined brown

People will say... what is in your gravy or sauce?

I use several jar/tube items, depending on the gravy or sauce I make. Anchovy Paste, Umami or Marmite. You/they will never know how you developed that extra flavor... until they ask. So make your pasta sauce, your short ribs, your chili, brown gravy, beef stew all will benefit. Enjoy! just don't taste any of those straight from the jar... unless you are learning to use.
