Swiss group OM exploded out of Lucerne, Switzerland, in the early 1970s and quickly became a force on the club and festival circuit, scoring a major success at Montreux in 1974. Subsequently the group's cause was taken up by ECM, and OM recorded four discs for ECM's sister label JAPO, before disbanding in 1982. 'OM: A Retrospective' includes tracks from Kirikuki (recorded 1975), Rautionaha (1976) and OM with Dom um Ramao (recorded 1977) - the latter with a guest appearance from the great Weather Report percussionist - as well as the entire album Cerberus. Cerberus, which the band regarded as their magnum opus, was produced by Manfred Eicher in Oslo in 1980. OM named themselves after John Coltrane's convulsive 1965 recording but the band was also inspired by Jimi Hendrix and they combined the power and dynamics of rock with jazz intelligence and freedom. Their motto: "Electric Jazz - Free Music". Christy Doran: "We came from rock, but we played jazz" In the liner notes (augmented with archive photos), Swiss author Peter Rüedi charts the band's history. After OM broke up in 1982, its members appeared intermittently on ECM, in combinations with each other and separately. Guitarist Doran, drummer Studer & bassist Burri were all on Musik für zwei Kontrabässe, elektrische Gitarre und Schlagzeug. Doran and Studer were part of the power trio Red Twist and Tuned Arrow, and Studer was also in Pierre Favre's 'Singing Drums' collective, and Rainer Brüninghaus's Continuum band with Markus Stockhausen. Whether OM, the band, has a new run of life after its Swiss reunion concert June 2006 remains to be seen, but the reissue on CD of this music from the band's heyday will be welcomed by listeners old and new.
