然而，20多年前的那一版本已经过时。在那一版中，我描述了1329种鸟类，但在的这一版中，我收录了1484种鸟类，另外还有十几种补充鸟种。在过去20多年间，鸟类分类学有了比较大的变化，一些亚种被提升为种，一些种类的种名、属名甚至所属的科和目都发生了变化，比如鹰形目早已变为鹰形目和隼形目，曾经的大科，诸如曾包含了各种鹛类和莺类的莺科，如今已枝分叶散。此外，在过去20年间，一些新种和已知种类在中国有了新发现，比如四川短翅莺、褐头朱雀以及一些其他的中国鸟类新记录。随着科研工作的深入以及观鸟活动的普及，我们对中国鸟类的分布也有了更深入的了解，一些鸟类的分布区较过去有了重大变化。上述这些变化，在新版《中国鸟类野外手册》中都有体现。
