在笔者看来，杨绛这位出生于江苏无锡的江南女性，身上蕴含了中国传统女性所有理想化的特征。世人皆知的杨绛，大多是作为‘钱锺书夫人’面貌呈现的。而杨先生自己也非常中意这个称呼，并未因为自己的文学和翻译成就而要求别人称她“翻译家、散文家杨绛”。如果要笔者用一句话来形容杨绛，那么一定是“落花无言，人淡如菊”——温柔和婉，聪颖贤惠。
笔者认为杨绛一生最打动人的是她所具备的中华民族传统的沉静之美、内秀之美，还有她的甘做“灶下婢”的奉献精神。从她的本意上，她并不希望我们小辈去写她。当提出采访她时，她总是很谦虚地谢绝。对此，感触良多。

这时，杨绛已经八十多岁了。身体却远没有后来好，她非常瘦弱，走路颤颤巍巍，得扶着墙。
女儿和丈夫先后离去，受到致命打击的杨绛陷入重度失眠，夜里需要吃两次安眠药，先吃两颗安定，睡到半夜又醒，再吃一次，接着睡。
杨绛读了许多古圣哲的书，最后选择了柏拉图对话录中的《斐多》篇（又称《裴洞》篇），反复读了很多遍，最后决意翻译这篇对话。
杨绛说过：“悲痛是不能对抗的，只能逃避。”她的逃避方式便是埋头翻译像柏拉图的《斐多》，苏格拉底相信灵魂不灭，坚持自己的信念，因信念而选择死亡。书中苏格拉底就义前从容不惧与门徒讨论生死问题的情景深深打动了杨绛，给了她一个人生活下去的勇气。杨绛想借翻译自己不识的希腊文，投入全部心神而忘掉自己。
