马基雅维利虽然写了不少大部头，但这部“小书”倾注了他颇多的热情、丰盈的内心，以及他一生追求的使命感。他说：
黄昏时分，我就回家，回到我的书斋。我在门口脱掉满是尘土的农服，换上朝服，回到古老的宫廷之中，与往昔的古人对话，他们热情地欢迎我，与我共餐，分享他们行为的动机，宽厚地解答我的疑惑。在这四个小时内，我丝毫不觉疲倦，我忘掉了一切烦恼，将对贫穷的沮丧和对死亡的恐惧抛诸脑后，完全痴迷于这些不朽的人物。正如但丁所说：‘学习产生的知识将永存，否则不会有结果。’我记录了在这些谈话中学习到的东西，编成一本小册子，题为《君主论》，孜孜不倦、倾我所有探索这个课题，讨论君主究竟是什么，它有哪些类型，怎样获得，怎样维系，以及为什么会丧失。……此书一定会获得君主，尤其是新任君主的欢迎。
