《孙子兵法》是我国春秋末期大军事家孙武所著的一部军事经典著作，素有“武学之圣典，兵家之绝唱”之美誉。
孙武的生卒年月现已不可考。据史载，他本是齐国人，后移居吴国，因擅长兵法，被吴国大臣伍子胥推荐给吴王阖闾。孙武见吴王时，将其所撰兵法十三篇献给吴王，阖闾读后大悦，遂以孙武为将，为自己练兵。后来孙武带兵西破强楚，北威齐晋，扬名诸侯之间，让吴国顺利成为当时的霸主。孙武终老于吴国，葬在吴都巫门外。
《孙子兵法》虽然篇幅不长，但信息量极大，可谓字字珠玑，无半点累赘之言。孙武在其书中揭示了一系列具有普遍意义的军事规律，提出了一套完整的军事理论体系。这一理论不仅深受战国以来历代军事家的重视和推崇，对他们的军事思想和实践产生了重要的影响，而且在世界军事思想领域内拥有广泛的影响，享有极高的声誉，至今仍有其不可忽视的科学价值。《孙子兵法》不仅具有极高的军事价值，还蕴含了许多哲学道理，不仅可以应用于行军打仗，对于人们为人处世、开阔眼界亦有帮助。虽然成书数千年，但其并未过时，于今天的我们仍多有启发。
关于《孙子兵法》，曾经有过一些纷争。有人因《汉书·艺文志》著录《吴孙子兵法》有八十二篇，图九卷，而多认为十三篇是曹操削除繁冗，取其精粹而成。又有人因《汉书·艺文志》著录的《齐孙子》，即《孙膑兵法》久已失佚，后世流传的只有一部《孙子兵法》，而认为十三篇出自孙膑之手。不过，1972年山东临沂银雀山汉墓出土了一部《孙膑兵法》和《孙子兵法》的残简，以及记载孙武言行的七十余枚竹简，此后学者们已多倾向于
十三篇出自孙武之手，八十二篇则是孙武后学所著，是用以补充和解释十三篇的。
与《孙子兵法》一样，《孙膑兵法》也是我国古代军事文化遗产中璀璨的瑰宝。为了便于大家对比阅读，书后还附有《孙膑兵法》。
本篇论述的是能否进行战争的问题。孙武在本篇中指出，战争是关乎国家生死存亡的大事。“道”“天” “地”“将”“法”是决定战争胜负的五项基本要素。“道”是指使人民与统治者同心同德；“天”指昼夜、晴雨、寒暑等气候时节和天命、人事、道义；“地”指土地，具体如地势、地形的高下、险要、平坦，距离的远近等对于攻守进退的利弊；“将”指将帅的智谋、赏罚必信、爱抚士卒、英勇果断和军纪严明；“法”则指军队的组织编制、将吏职责的划分和管理，以及军需物资的供应、管理。孙子认为，从这五要素出发，根据国君是否贤明，将帅有无才能，“天”“地”两方面的条件如何，法令能否贯彻实行，兵力强弱，军队是不是训练有素，赏罚是否分明，可以预知战争的胜负，从而采取适当的对策和相应的行动。
