著者于满清末年发明厚黑学，大旨言一部二十四史中的英雄豪杰，其成功秘诀不外面厚心黑四字，历引史事为证。民国元年，揭登成都《公论日报》，计分三卷，上卷厚黑学，中卷厚黑经，下卷厚黑传习录。发表出来，读者哗然。中卷仅登及一半，我受友人的劝告，也就中止。原文底稿，已不知抛弃何所。十六年，刊《宗吾臆谈》，把三卷大意摘录其中。去年舍侄等在北平，从《臆谈》中抽出，刊为单行本，上海某杂志，似乎也曾登过。
我当初本是随便写来开玩笑，不料从此以后，厚黑学二字，竟洋溢乎四川，成一普通名词。我也莫名其妙，每遇着不相识的朋友，旁人替我介绍，必说道：“这就是发明厚黑学的李某。”几于李宗吾三字和厚黑学三字合而为一，等于释迦牟尼与佛教合而为一，孔子与儒教合而为一。有一次在宴会席上，某君指着我，向众人说道：“此君姓李名宗吾，是厚黑学的先进。”我赶急声明道：“你这话错了，我是厚黑学祖师，你们才是厚黑学的先进。我的位置，等于佛教中的释迦牟尼，儒教中的孔子，当然称为祖师。你们亲列门墙，等于释迦门下的十二圆觉，孔子门下的四科十哲，对于其他普通人，当然称为先进。”
