我们现在所看到的《庄子》，是由晋代郭象整编的，分为《内篇》七篇，《外篇》十五篇，《杂篇》十一篇，共三十三篇，本书就是从这三十三篇中选取重点篇目进行解读。其实《庄子》早被记录在《汉书·艺文志》，原为五十二篇，但著作未能全部流传下来。
而关于著作的真伪问题，历史上众说纷纭，不少学者通过历史资料或学术思想，以及历史事件等对其进行研究。其中以宋代苏轼为代表，他认为《杂篇》中的《让王》《渔父》《说剑》《盗跖》“浅陋而不入道”，或有诋毁孔子之意。一般来说，《内篇》为庄子自著，《外篇》则除了庄子自著之外还有部分是庄子后学所作。而《杂篇》中《说剑》一篇更为纵横家言，与庄学并无太大的关系。

本篇是《庄子》中非常著名的代表篇目之一，充满了奇特想象以及浪漫色彩，形象地运用寓言和比喻，具有非常独特的风格。《逍遥游》是庄子哲学思想中一个明确而重要的阐述。全篇提倡人们摆脱一切外界束缚，无所凭依，从而去追求精神世界完全真空的自由状态。在庄子的哲学思想中，客观现实中的每一件事物，以及人类本身都是对立但又相互联系的，要想无所依凭，重要的是忘记自己。所以他希望所有的东西都能够顺其自然，从现实中脱离出来，否定了人在生活中的作用，将人类生活以及万物的生存合为一体；提倡不停留于任何事物之中，追求完全的、的精神自由。

北冥①有鱼，其名曰鲲。鲲之大，不知其几千里也；化而为鸟，其名为鹏。鹏之背，不知其几千里也；怒而飞，其翼若垂天之云。是鸟也，海运则将徙于南冥。南冥者，天池也。《齐谐》者，志怪者也。《谐》之言曰：“鹏之徙于南冥也，水击三千里，抟扶摇而上者九万里，去以六月息者也。”野马也，尘埃也，生物之以息相吹也。天之苍苍，其正色邪？其远而无所至极邪？其视下也，亦若是则已矣。
