选择翻译《心》还有一个重要原因，便是加缪在《西绪福斯神话》（译林出版社，2013年版）一开头提出的：真正严肃的哲学问题只有一个，那就是自杀。《心》是明治天皇去世快两年后才开始连载的，书中的“先生”差不多是紧跟着殉死的乃木希典之后自杀，这难道不就是对明治时代的回望与反思吗？我正是抱着如此疑问开始重新阅读并翻译此书的。
此后将近一年半的翻译过程犹如一场文字修行，每个动笔翻译的清晨或深夜，都好像与书中人物对话，更伴随着对作者意图的无尽揣测。有时候竟会枯坐数小时而无一字收获，此时才更深切体会到严复所谓“一名之立，旬月踟蹰”之中的苦与乐。不过时移世易，我辈如今翻译时已不比从前那般困难重重，现在文献资料丰富，检索也方便，可谓前人栽树，后人乘凉。可也时刻不敢懈怠，总是战战兢兢，如临深渊，如履薄冰，唯恐曲解人意又传达有误。噫吁嚱，翻译之难曷可胜言哉！
《心》连载完结之后出版了单行本，汉文功底深厚的夏目漱石所设计的封面上引用了《荀子·解蔽》篇中的一句话：心者，形之君也，而神明之主也。看完整部小说后再回过头重读此句，难免心有戚戚，当初的疑问也释然了。是故惟愿阅此书者皆能不役于物，不蔽于欲，则幸甚焉。
