作者简介

维克多·雨果，19世纪法国浪漫主义代表作家。1802年生于法国白桑松，上有兄长二人。1816年，雨果在16岁时已能创作杰出的诗句，21岁时出版诗集，声名大噪。 1845年（43岁），法王路易·菲利普绶予上议院议员职位，自此专心从政。

法国大革命爆发后，雨果于此时期四出奔走鼓吹革命，为人民贡献良多，赢得新共和政体的尊敬，晋封伯爵，并当选国民代表及国会议员。等到拿破仑第三称帝，雨果对此大加攻击，因此被放逐国外。此后20年间各处漂泊，此时期完成小说《悲惨世界》（Les Miserables），同名音乐剧即依此小说改编而成。

1870年法国恢复共和政体（第三共和），雨果亦结束流亡生涯，回到法国。

1885年，雨果以83岁高龄辞世，于潘德拉举行国葬。

　　《悲惨世界》篇幅浩大，卷帙繁多，作者从1828年起构思，到1845年动笔创作，直至1861年才完稿出书，历时三十余年。
　　雨果的创作动机来自这样一件事实：1801年，一个名叫彼埃尔·莫的穷苦农民，因饥饿而偷了一块面包，被判5年苦役，刑满释放后，持黄色身份证找活干又处处碰壁。到了1828年，他又着手搜集有关米奥利斯主教及其家庭的资料。这样，他就掌握了这部小说的原始素材，开始酝酿写一个释放的苦役犯受到一位圣徒式的主教的感化而弃恶从善的故事。继而，他又设想把苦役犯变成企业家。在1829年和1830年间，作者还大量搜集有关黑玻璃制造业的材料，这便是冉阿让到海滨蒙特伊，化名为马德兰先生，开办工厂并发迹的由来。
　　到了1832年，这部小说的构思已相当明确，然而，作者还迟迟不动笔，继续搜集素材，在此基础上写了几部小说；他还参观了布雷斯特和土伦的苦役犯监狱，在街头目睹了类似芳汀受辱的场面。
