  上海话有5个声调:阴平,阴去,阳去,阴入,阳入。
  这里说的上海话声调都是单音节上的,也就是读单字时的调子。在语句中,上海话声调会因连读而产生各种变调,这些变调只有在说习惯了上海话以后才能用熟。事实上,有不少上海人说话时声调也时常说错,可能祖籍不是上海。但在说话时一般都能理解,多被人认为不是正宗上海人罢了。就好像国人说普通话,其实都并不标准,各种方音习惯都会带入普通话,但都不会影响互相之间的交际;也如同外国入学习现代汉语,声调常会说错,甚至完全没有声调,但在特定的语境里人们也大致能清楚他在说什么话一样,对句意的理解影响不大。
  上海话声调是很容易辨别的。这里先看阴平声和阴去声。
  (1)阴平声的特点
  上海话的阴平声除部分原就是入声之外,和普通话的阴平声(声)一样,都是清辅音。调值在听感上有点像普通话中的去声。比如“天、机、非、东、金、方、低、批、加、开、翻、该”。
  (2)阴去声的特点
  凡普通话属于上声或去声的,上海话除原先是入声的一部分外,也都归在此。这里也都是清辅音声母。和普通话的上声单念不同,在听感上也有点带拐。比如“舔、几、费、懂、紧、放、底、屁、假、凯、反、改”。
