快有十年了，我的生活一直局限在很小的圈子里，不用去单位上班，亲人和朋友大多在千里之外，身边仅有几个朋友，平时也少有往来。我似乎喜欢上了独往独来的生活。其实也不是喜欢，是无奈。一个人待在家里是够难受的，但出门去忍受别人的各种习惯，或者让别人来将就我，似乎更难受。我不吃酒，怕麻辣，也不打麻将纸牌（不会），坐下来还喜欢一本正经地谈文学，要对上这样的人，也许比找同志还难。同志还有俱乐部或某些固定的活动场合。在成都，据说四川日报门前的阅报栏是同志们的活动地带，有点约定成俗的意思。有点以前那种英语沙龙的感觉。成都是个十分享乐的城市，遍地酒吧，茶馆，美食，中高低档，一应俱全，工薪高薪，蓝领白领，都有各自消受的阵地。我待过七个城市，我可以肯定地说，成都人的生活是最灿烂的，灿烂得像罂粟花一样，有些奢靡，有些邪乎。但我还是很寡淡，跟儿子打打算术牌（我本人发明的），下下军棋、象棋成了我主要的娱乐。我的时间，除了正常的休息和所谓的工作：就是读书或写点东西，我自己都不知道是怎么过的。如果一定要说，就是发呆，胡思乱想。
老实说，我的小说大多是胡思乱想出来的。卡夫卡靠做梦写小说，博尔赫斯靠读哲学书写小说，写小说的门道看来不止一个。我收集各个年代的地图、旅游册子、地方编年史，然后把胡思乱想种在合适的时间、地理上，我就是这样做小说的。以为，这样弄出来的东西总不会有人对号入座，不会被历史主人责难。奇怪的是，这些年我的几部稍有影响的小说都有人对号入座，他们以各种方式与我取得联系，指出我作品的种种不实或错别。有个人更奇怪，说我《解密》写的是导弹之父钱学森。奇怪踏上了旅程，更奇怪的肯定还在后面，《黑记》写的是一个姑娘，她乳房上长有一块黑记，黑记有点神秘，有性欲，抚摸它比抚摸毗邻的粉红色乳头还叫她激动。这完全是个幻想加玄想的东西，却也有人来对号认领，找到当事医生，指控他泄密。真是对不起那位医生了，他连我是男是女都不知晓，怎么跟我泄密呢？《暗算》就更不用说了，由于电视剧的火爆（据说至少有三亿人看过），来找我论是非的人更多，以致很长一段时间我都只好蛰居在乡下。因为找的人太多，已经影响到我的正常生活。这些人中有位高权重的将军，也有类似701那些机构里的那些阿炳、黄依依、钱之江式的人物，或是他们的后辈。他们中有的代表个人、家庭，有的代表单位、组织，有的来感谢我，有的来指责我。感谢也好，指责也罢，我总是要腾出时间接待，解疑答问。其实，我要说的都大同小异，所以一度我就像可怜的祥林嫂一样，不时老调重弹。
当中有一个人，来意有点暧昧，他既不是来感谢我，也不是来指责我。从某种意义上说，他不是来听我讲的，而是来对我讲的。他来自浙江杭州，姓潘，名向新，是个化学教授，年前刚从某大学退休，赋闲在家。他告诉我，他看过我几乎所有的作品，包括根据我小说改编的影视，他认为我是个讲故事的高手。“但是，”他话锋一转，说，“真正讲故事的高手是生活本身。”我说当然，生活无奇不有。他说：“我手上有一个故事，是我父亲的经历，绝对是真实的。”问我有没有兴趣听。我说我对真实的故事不感兴趣，我的小说都是虚构的。他说：“你还是听一听吧，也许你会有兴趣的。”
