瑜伽是印度教中的修行方法之一，佛教沿用此名，作为禅定或止观的代名词。所谓瑜伽行，就是修行种种禅定 观行，其中*常用者，为小乘部派所修之数息观与不净观。至于瑜伽师者，亦即自作修行乃至讲述传授瑜伽诸法之师。修习种种观行的佛教僧侣，被尊称为瑜伽师或 观行师，这些瑜伽行者，即是瑜伽行唯识派的前身。瑜伽师地，即意指瑜伽师所依、所行的境界。本论的汉文译本，在唐译全本问世之前，已有多种节译本，但由 唐代伟大的佛家玄奘翻译的这个译本则是*完全、*接近原本、*精妙、影响海内外**的。玄奘用了整整三年时间，于贞观二十二年（公元年）译完《瑜 伽师地论》一百卷，并将此译作与其它已译作品奉请唐太宗过目，太宗手持《瑜伽师地论》，龙颜大悦，欣然为其新译诸经作了总序，即<大唐三藏圣教 序>。尽管《瑜珈师地论》在佛教经典里属于高、精、深的修行理论，只有证悟的得道高僧才能讲述，但对于普通的修行者，甚至仅仅是有缘人，佛法既非文 亦非问，只要怀着一颗恭敬的心，一切自性的体验都将是修证。

《瑜伽师地论》100卷。弥勒讲，无著记，略称《瑜伽论》，收于《大正藏》第30册。系印度大乘佛教两大派中瑜伽行派的基础性论书，也是中国法相宗*重要的典籍，为佛发展史上的划时代作品，被称为佛教思想的一大宝库，其丰厚深刻又别具一格的智慧凝聚，为整个人类思想发展史写了非常灿烂的一页，至今依然在世界范围内绽放着耀眼的光芒!
该书主要内容是记录作者听闻弥勒自兜率天下降至中印度阿踰陀国某讲堂说法的经过，其中详细叙述了瑜伽行的观法，系统论释了眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意等识的性质和禅观渐次发展过程中的精神境界以及修行瑜伽禅观的各种果位。以分析名相有无开始，*后加以排斥，认为识所依的客观对象是人们根本
心识即阿赖耶识所假现的，只有远离有与无、存在与非存在等对立的观念，才能悟入中道实相，获得的超越。由于本论系统解释瑜伽师所依所行的"十七地"，故又称《十七地论》。而十七地之中，尤以"菩萨地"*为重要。
唐代玄奘大师为求取本论全文而远赴印度游，*终在中印度那烂陀寺从戒贤法师那里得到真传，回国后即于贞观二十一年(7)五月，于长安弘福寺翻经院开始传译。当时列席译场的，有名僧灵会、灵隽、辩机、文备、神泰等二十余人。在玄奘大师的主持下，经过大家的通力合作，耗时一年整，到贞观二十二年五月，这部煌煌巨著正式在中华大地上诞。

弥勒菩萨，意译为慈氏，音译为梅呾利耶、梅怛俪药，在未来人寿万岁时成佛以后，将是释迦牟尼佛的继任者，常尊称为弥勒佛。他是大乘佛教大菩萨之一，大乘经典中又常称为阿逸多菩萨。他被唯识派奉为鼻祖，其庞大思想体系由无著、世亲菩萨阐释弘扬，深受中国佛教大师道安和玄奘的推崇。
