《神农本草经》（简称《本草经》或《本经》），是我国现存最早的药物学经典著作。 传统中药里也包含动物类和矿物类等其他种类药物，但植物类占绝大多数。如《本经》中所录药物共365种，其中植物药252种，动物药67种，矿物药46种。因此，“本草”在古代成为中药的代称，“本草经”之称由此而来。本书撰写约在战国时期，其作者不可考。由于《帝王世纪》有：“炎帝神农氏，……，尝味草木，宣药疗疾，……，著本草四卷”之说，使人认为《本经》作者为神农氏，因此本书被称为《神农本草经》。后人学者对其作者也有其他观点，但均无考据。历史上的炎帝神农氏和皇帝轩辕氏一样，作为中华民族的先祖，与其说他是一位卓越的个人，不如说他是我国古代先人集体智慧的代表。我们对大自然万物及其和人体生命之间的关系认识贯穿于人类实践经验的始终，所以从这个角度，《神农本草经》也算名副其实。 《神农本草经》全书共四卷，第一卷为关于药物的总论，二至四卷为药物各论。 在总论部分，《本经》提出了药物按照药效性质进行分类的方法，将其分为上、中、下三品。另外，《本经》和《黄帝内经》中提出的君臣佐使的组方原则类似，也将药物以朝中的君臣地位为喻，来表明其主次关系和配伍法则。《本经》对药物性味也有详尽的描述，指出药物有“寒、热、温、凉四气”和“酸、咸、甘、苦、辛五味”，它们是药物的基本性质，在使用中针对疾病的寒、热、湿、燥等不同性质选择用药。药物相互配伍选择需参考药性的生克关系，了解药物的归经、走势、升降、浮沉，形成中药组方。 在药物各论部分，《本经》共载药物共365种，其中上品120种，主要是一些药性相对较平和的无毒药，以滋补营养为主，可以长期服用，既能保健防病又能强身延年；中品120种，药性相对上品较强，表现为无毒或有小毒，多数具有补养和祛病的双重功效，但一般不适宜长期服用；下品125种，药性猛烈克伐正气，表现为有毒或剧毒，是以祛除病邪为主，用量和用法需严格控制，一般要在专业医生的临床处方指导下按照病邪的证候特点使用。 作为我国最早的药物学专著，由于历史和时代的局限，《神农本草经》也存在一些缺陷，如在道家神仙不死观念的主导下，收入了服石、炼丹、修仙等内容，并把一些剧毒的矿物药如丹砂、雄黄等列为上品之首，认为长期服用有延年益寿的功效，如朴硝“炼饵服之，轻身神仙”，太一余粮“久服耐寒暑，不饥，轻身，飞行千里，神仙”，泽泻“久服……能行水上”，而以我们的现代认识观点，这些显然是荒谬的。但书中对药物性质的定位和对其功能主治的描述是比较准确的，总体上是符合客观规律的，书中提出的大部分药物学理论和配伍规则以及“七情和合”原则在几千年的用药实践中发挥了巨大作用。因此，它被誉为中药学经典著作，成为传统中医药工作者案头的工具书之一。 《神农本草经》文字精炼古朴，却将中药理论精髓非常准确地表达出来。因此，该书不仅是中药学的开山和扛鼎之作，也是中华民族传统国学中的一枝奇葩。 《神农本草经》原本早已失传，但由于它对药物学的巨大影响，在中国医学历史上不少药学著作都采录过它的原文，从而其内容得以被辗转抄录保存。而在后世采录过程中，每一次都会在其基础上进行发挥和补充，这使不同辑本在内容上存在一定差异。本书主要依据清代顾观光的辑本，同时参考1982年国家中医古籍整理出版规划的马继兴版《神农本草经辑注》，对各味药物的描述翻译参考了《中医临床丛书合订本•本草卷》。 本书为大众科普版本，内容结构上除了对原文翻译并对药物性状进行简单描述，还穿插了一些中药的传说和小故事，以使读者在了解知识的同时，更能获得文学性和趣味性的阅读体验。由于编者的认识水平有限，如有理解和解释不当之处，还望大家见谅。另外，本书内容仅供对健康或传统中医药感兴趣的读者朋友们学习参考，所涉及药物还请在专业医生的临床指导下使用。
