艾绒是艾条的主要原材料,艾绒的质量直接影响到施灸的效果,而艾绒的质量与艾叶的新陈有密切关系。
陈艾要好于新艾
采收一年之内的艾叶称为新艾,它性燥、烟大、味烈、燃烧速度快、火力暴猛,不仅易灼伤皮肤,而且易伤及经脉,耗损元气,不能长期灸用。
李时珍在《本草纲目》中讲:“凡用艾叶需要陈久者,治令细软,谓之熟艾。若生艾灸火则易伤人肌。”熟艾就是陈艾,一般存放三年以上可称为陈艾。陈艾火力温和,温度平缓,烟少,渗透性强,热能堆积效果明显。
蕲艾是品质好的艾叶
艾叶中以蕲艾好。在明朝,七尖蕲艾叶曾是进贡皇宫的御品。药物学家李时珍更是对蕲艾推崇有加,并记录在《本草纲目》中:“自成化以来,则以蕲州(蕲春旧称)者为胜,用充方物,天下重之,谓之蕲艾。”那是因为蕲艾挥发油含量,而且黄酮含量也。
那么如何分辨艾绒的优劣呢?主要是从绒、色、味、火、烟、灰六个方面入手。

细如棉绒,质地纯净,柔软干燥,可捏成型,易燃且中途不易熄。
纤维不清,有杂质,粗硬潮湿,不易捏成型,灸时易熄。
