希望练就精金美玉般的品德操行，就必须经历烈火的锤炼锻造；希望建立惊天动地似的丰功伟业，就必须保持如履薄冰的谨慎。有句话说“天降大任于斯人也，必先苦其心志，劳其筋骨，饿其体肤，空乏其身，行拂乱其所为，所以动心忍性，曾益其所不能。”上天将要降大任在这样的人身上，一定会事先使他的内心痛苦，使他的筋骨劳累，使他经受饥饿，使他承受贫困之苦，使他做事颠倒错乱，总不顺心，通过这些来使他的内心警觉，使他的性格坚强起来，增加他不具备的才能。要想在竞争中打败对手，就必须具备比对手更强的实力。这实力不是生来就有，而是在磨难与打击中，逐渐获得的超人一等的意志、品质和能力。
