埃玛纽埃尔-爱德华·沙畹（1865—1918），是近代以来*有成就的汉学大师之一，公认的“欧洲汉学泰斗”。1907年，沙畹从巴黎来到中国，开始第二次在华考古活动，《华北考古记》就是这次实地考察的学术成果。
沙畹是运用现代考古技术对中国遗址进行实地考察与测量的学者，通过大量拓印、抄录遗址文物中的碑文题记，收集整理了一千七百余张图片，并对遗址文物进行了艺术、政治、宗教、社会等多角度的阐释。这些遗迹在后来的战乱过程中或损毁或流失，均遭不同程度的破坏，这些图片及资料对于后世的研究就更显弥足珍贵。
《华北考古记》是一部具有划时代意义的考古文献，同时也是中西学术交流的历史见证。1909年本书法文版面世，中国的登封三阙、孝堂山、武梁祠、龙门石窟等遗址由此进入西方学术视野，成为世界汉学及东方艺术史研究的重要课题，中国金石学也首次被纳入法国汉学的研究领域。同时，西方现代考古学方法也为中国学界所重视和运用，推动了中国传统金石学研究的发展。

一个时代可以成就一批大师，而一批大师也缔造一个时代，学术界亦是如 此。19世纪末20世纪初，中国的政治、社会、学术都处在巨大的变革之中，那 是一个产生革命家、英雄和学术大师的时代。但是，由于中国当时在科学技术 上的落后，在许多学术领域内，中国学者尚未涉足。西方学者反而先行一步， 走进中国这片未开垦的土地，创造了学术辉煌。
就在此时，法国从事汉学研究的年轻学者埃玛纽埃尔-爱德华·沙畹 (Emmanuel E?douard Chavannes，以下简称“沙畹”)，来到中国，以华北为中心，开始他的 考古调查工作。
