  清晨五点四十五分,美国号邮轮上,保罗和我从温暖的铺位上醒来,朝舱壁上的小舷窗外望去。前一夜我俩睡得都不踏实,部分是由于天气,部分是由于难抑的激动心情。我们揉揉眼睛,向玻璃外张望。外头雾蒙蒙的,在浮动的迷濛和深蓝色的黎明微光中,依稀看得见岸边闪烁的灯光。1948年11月3日,星期三,我们终于抵达法国的勒阿弗尔(LeHavre)。
  我从没来过欧洲,心中对未来一片茫然。船已在海上行驶了一个星期(感觉上可要长得多),我早就迫不及待地想踏上陆地了。自打亲人们在满城秋色的纽约把我们送上船,这艘美国号邮轮就直挺挺地驶进了北大西洋的狂风中。庞大的船体在楼房高的巨浪中颠簸着,海浪的拍打声、摇撼声、颤抖声、呜咽声……在耳边不停回响。过道里悬挂着救生索。抬高……抬高……抬高……巨大的船身不断上扬着,攀到了波峰,犹豫摇摆一会儿,然后跌落……跌落……跌落……船头不断下滑,一头扎进波谷,溅起大片大片的水沫。我们筋骨酸痛、精神萎顿,地上满是摔得粉碎的碗碟。绝大多数乘客和部分船员都难受得面无人色。保罗和我幸运得很,我俩有当水手的潜质,胃口犹如铁打般坚定:有天早上,只有五个乘客勉力去吃了早餐,我俩就在其中。
